A specimen of the Early Cretaceous spatangoid Hemiaster elegans washitae (Lambert) appears to have been parasitized by gastropods. The first infestation occurred when the echinoid was small and disrupted the addition of new plates resulting in a deformed petal. This is the first fossil record of snail parasitism on an echinoid.
