Description(s)

Dragastan et al., 1998:

Diagonosis: Elliptical to circular in shape, limpet holes disposed superficially in the marginal areas of the Chaetetopsis zonata colony. The hole depressions are small, not so deep, with clear margins and bottom uneven. They are generated by patellogastropods wich excavated superficially the surface of Chaetetopsis colony.

Description: Elliptical to circular in shape, limpet holes distributed preferntially to the margins of Chaetetopsis colony. The home depresion are not so deep, variable in penetretion between 0,5-11 mm and the bottom uneven. The pits have a variable diameter: the larger one is usually 4-5 mm and the shorter one is 3-4 mm. They are distributed predominantly to both latetal margins of the colony. Remaks: By shape and dimensions, Patellichnus is very similar to recent limpet holes generated by patellogastropods group. The recent patellogastropods limpets are inhabitants of intertidal to shallow marine rocky shores. Their presence in the Barremian - Early Aptian of South Dobrogea and also the olistoliths of East Carpathians indicates a shallow marine environment of euphotic zone, being herbivorous organisms.
